Provident Energy Trust: Income for Today and Tomorrow
nice article, refreshing, how about some color on the breitburn deal. I think they sold high, which is the way it's supposed to be done, nice. How about the risk management that has puts in place for <$62 oil. How about the death of coal because of obama, what else can the US burn to make electricity instead, oh yeah, nat gas. Long pvx, oilsands are languishing now, but, what happens when opec missteps in a reactionary tone to low prices, and cuts production massively. Hello domestic (north american) oil. If they cut div in half that still gives new money an impressive yield, and the old timers a better than average yield.

I don't know much about these names in mlp's, but, I do know the canroy's I follow are mostly cost hedged with puts in that $62ish range with a portion of their supply, surprisingly downside protected as long as the bottom doesn't totally fall out. I would think energy holders have a similar risk management strategy and like it was mentioned above the pipeline guys get paid anyway because the stuff has gotta keep flowing.

Don't Ignore Coal at Current Lows
to mark anthony yes I agree short term bearish on coal, but, that indicates buying time to me as is the point of this exercise buy low etc. Seems drys would be a bear too until things pickup. I bet after 1Q09 things will look a lot different from the international viewpoint. Indonesia seems the only real competitor for the grade of coal the us produces. Weaker diluted dollar will get us commodities moving again.

good observation dee, they are probably headed to the powder river basin (prb) in wyoming. There is international interest in the prb which is the saudi arabia of coal. PRB spot prices are cheaper than appalachia and everyone is looking for cheaper ways to transport it out to the west and east coasts. The big problem with the prb is it probably costs more to haul a ton than to buy a ton of coal. Canada pacific's buying interest in the DM&E RR would give them a main line from prb to vancouver to ship to china. ACI owns black thunder the highest yielding mine in the best stake in the world. Long aci, buy it now while it's cheap and the morons that say obama will shut down coal will have to get used to living in the dark.

How Does the Financial Crisis Affect the Peak Oil Thesis?
Oh yeah, "we are addicted to oil" are the truest words I have ever heard uttered from washington. Consumers will be dancing a jig when they see 2.50 gas, and they'll be driving older inefficient models because they can't afford new.

      Visa's First Annual Shareholder Meeting a Non-Event
      Thanks for the article

I am glad you received the access you did despite owning a relatively small position. I would like to think that spirit of taking a position is a powerful force in the macro scheme. Consider this, possibly if we got joe six pack to buy a gov't backed bond instead of buying scratch off tickets at the mini mart we would have a powerful fist comprised of many weak hands. Anyway, that's way off point. I liked that you got some color regarding the discover settlement. Also, I would add my 2 cents and say no to "diworsification&... with the free cash. I am long a small position on V I believe the downside imo is a $35 share price sometime in the next year to that I would be a buyer. They do carry a small p/e premium which is hard to maintain in real hard times. I think visa should do a small buyback with some of their cash, I think that would go far. This is a grower we don't buy this for the dividend after all, I wonder why they bothered with a dividend in the first place.

Utilities Beginning to Generate Interest for Longs
lower feedstock prices on the front end and a fresh rate increase on the back end with a steady stream of folks who can't live without it. I bought back 33% of my ED position at $35 on crash day, that I sold last month. Here's a kicker, go around your house and count the things that you plug in, then think about the amount of things you had that you plugged in ten years ago, then think about the population growth, this is secular growth at its finest. Just look at all the crap you have for your tv now, and nothing is ever "off" anymore now it "sleeps" .

Netflix May Dominate The Online Video World, But With What Business Model?
aapl tv has more in common with the on demand programming offered by cable. They are both pay per view. If you like paying four bucks just to watch a movie then the previous is fine, but, my family watches a lot of movies and this would bankrupt me, long nflx. Also, cost of aapl box $229 I believe, you don't need the roku box unless you want it, I stream off my pc. I agree the content is an expensive gamble, but, the library has grown exponentially. I think big content will mean a lot to the likes of microsoft, I see the past actions of msft as flirtation, possibly we will see consummation? It would give a viable platform to compete with apple in a new emerging battlefield.

Alcoa's Bloodbath: Weak Demand, Tight Margins
You could make humongous cars out of plastic. LOL I wonder why suspend the stock buybacks, honestly it's never been cheaper and what a way to instill confidence, why not just scale back the buyback? How safe is this dividend? That seems like the 800lb gorilla in the room. According to the balance sheet they are sitting on a lot of finished goods, not good in todays environment. We like to see cash when times are tough, during the call I believe they stated 1:3 debt to cash, I wonder if they are counting goods as cash. Feedstock costs seem to be cheapening that's a plus. Maybe that's the plan, gorge on material while it's cheaper to make it and horde it until things get better. Seems Klaus has inherited a sh*t sandwich. Long AA on valuation. Though, I think a dividend cut will have the faithful running for the exits.
