geothermal - brines @ some localities are potentially a source of lithium. if the battery people are correct we are going to need a lot of lithium - from domestic sources,

Blood from a Stone and Oil from Shale
other places have oil shale resources too - estonia, sweden, northeast china. australia, israel for example.

the china resource was exploited by the japanese after 1931 and was a major source of fuel for their war machine,

the sweden resource also contains uranium values.

the negev resource in israel is used to generate electric power, they burn it (crushed) in circulating fluidized-bed boilers.

shale retorting processes have been around since 1927 and never went anywhere in the 1970's.

water is required for revegetating the waste pile (insitu retorting reduces the waste pile but doesn't eliminate it, the rock expands when cooked). like the man said you have to put some rancher out of business in order to buy his water rights.

dissolved solids in the colorado river watershed might become a problem if a big industry develops. we have water-quality requirements in a treaty with mexico that require desalination of the river before crossing the border.

      couple problems w/geothermal

waste brine disposal cost (sometimes deep well injection is required)

corrosion of equipment by nasty brine = maintenance cost

      odor problems (hydrogen sulfide)

The Smoking Gun of the Credit Crisis: FICO
lots of blame to be shared here.

crooked lenders created lots of toxic waste in order to grab big fat fees & run away with them. wall street whipped up a goulash using these ingredients & passed them on to suckers all over the world in order to grab big fat fees & run away with them.

      nuff said.

'solar panel farms in corporate parking lots'/

well if you go to florida you will see that the executives get reserved spaces with a roof over each. this helps make your paint & vinyl upholstery last longer. the plebians get to sit out in the direct sun. just put solar panels on the roofs that already exist. better yet give everybody a solar roof.

Why Most Americans Don't Mind if the Big Three Fail
      everybody hates ford?

it's true that everybody hated the pinto (uncomfortable seats).

i have a 2000 model v6 minivan (miles about 160k), it says quest on it but everything is ford parts. gives yeoman service. had one problem with a sticky throttle cable but that went away by itself (i didn't like the price i was quoted for a replacement part).

in 2006 i sold my 1994 e150 conversion van (over 150k mi). it had a problem w/the ABS but who doesn't have ABS problems. had a problem w/the hot water pipe to the rear cabin heater but that was caused by the conversion shop, not by ford. early on had problem keeping the front wheels aligned (i don't like that swing axle suspension) but once the techs in the shop were properly trained there was no further problem. wish i still had that van, my subaru can't haul enough stuff.

Electric Utilities: Thus Far a Relative Safe Haven
elec. utilities are voracious consumers of borrowed money for construction of facilities (generation, xmission, distribution, whatever, in today's environment of no credit available some plans will have to be shelved.

much coal is bought on long-term contracts. in the present environment of collapsing coal prices, some of these long-term contracts my be under-water.

safety during recessions is nice but if we ever return to a sensibly functioning economy utilities are not growth stocks. they do belong in a balanced portfolio along with high-quality corporate bonds.

most people don't seem to understand that we have more than just an automobile problem here.

we have an industrial-base problem here.

we are fighting 2 wars (thank you emperor george dubya) and you can't do wars w/o an industrial base.

our industrial base has been sick since the 1981 r.reagan overvalued dollar policy, made it impossible for u.s manufacturers to compete in world markets.

"excess electric power is always being wasted"

      not so.

fossil-fueled installations are built with load-following capability. if the dispatcher wants more juice in his lines, he can ramp up output from one or more of his units according to 'lowest-cost dispatch' or least-emissions dispatch' principles.

nukes don't like to be cycled this way, they last longer if base-loaded. that's why we have pumped storage as a load-leveling device.
