Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know Newsby SA Editor Rachael Granby- Bank trio becomes duo. Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought.
- Government considers next steps. As the financial crisis continues to worsen, the U.S. government is considering two dramatic steps to turn around, or at least slow, the damage: guaranteeing billions of dollars in bank debt and temporarily insuring all U.S. bank deposits. The moves, which would mark the government's most extensive intervention to date, are in discussion stages only.
- Credit stays frozen. As frozen credit markets refuse to thaw, the cost of default protection on corporate bonds reaches new global records amid investor concerns the credit crisis will trigger corporate failures as companies struggle to finance their businesses. Interbank lending remains limited, and borrowing from the Fed's expanded discount window continued its trend of setting new highs every week, as the total daily average rose to $420.2B vs. $367.8B last week.

Wednesday, October 15.Bullish Calls:Continental Resources (CLR) -- "This is a remarkable decline. All of the high quality ones are down so much, I can't go against it. This is where you pull the trigger.
3M (MMM) -- The moment this stock starts yielding 5%, I'm a buyer. Until then, keep your powder dry.Bearish Calls:Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."Email continues...
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend. - Stocks & Sectors -SampleSeeking Alpha - Stocks & SectorsInternet

Citigroup Report Further Fuels Debate About the Future of Gold
Faith in who? Credit as in debt? You betcha!
Lock in Low Gas Prices
Anybody wonder what is next?
As some of us keep saying, be prepared. Now.
The Volatility of Gold
Recent terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India mean all bets are off. Gunmen lobbing grenades off the Taj. These luxury hotels are hubs for foeigners, and hostages have been taken. This does not bode well for tourism and other markets.
Better Than the Depression? Don't Kid Yourselves
Reread your history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...
You now have the opportunity to prepare yourself and your family, if you so choose, to minimize your chance of suffering massive setbacks during this time.
It is great to continue to be optimistic! But..meanwhile, be pragmatic. During tough economic times take some precautions for yourselves. look how many people have been caught with their pans down. Do you have any idea, really, how your employer is weathering this mess?
We have a business that employs 14 individuals that rely on their job to feed, clothe, provide health care etc.. for their family. Trust me, none of them have any idea what the balance sheet is for our business, or how it has been affected by this market.
So, you too, unless you are self-employed, and very well -heeled, have no idea when the domino that is falling is the one that is right behind you...
Prepare in case you are wrong. Your family will thank you for it.
Is the Price of Gold Being Supressed?
Gold is currently at $816oz... we will see where it goes from here. Eventually, the dollar will devalue and you will have to choose your currency or metal...
Deflation, Monetary Velocity, and Why Gold's a Buy
The banks getting all the bailout money need to pass it along to businesses and consumers willing to borrow and buy land, expand their businesses etc... Credit card companies need to lower their rates - after all they are being bailed out by their customer -the taxpayer! Where is the Congress and Paulson in all this??? Create some rules before you dole out the money!!
If the U.S. Is in a Financial Crisis, Why Is the Dollar Rallying?
The dollar will not hold long term so watch what else everyone else is doing for clues....
Why the Dollar Has Rallied During Current Crisis
Exactly....and then what currency shall we be holding??
Disclosure: Long gold
China Continues To Consider U.S. Treasuries Its Best Option
Deflation Now; Inflation's Coming
Oh yes...If they are so aware of what they are doing , please tell me why we are in this mess in the first place? They have NO idea what they are doing, which is why the bailout hasn't worked and why companies are going bust at record numbers. Notice the jobless numbers? There is no "plan"... just a series of last ditch efforts to plug a dike with your remaining 4 fingers.
The entire globe is facing a financial meltdown and the dominos will continue to fall... Invest in Walmart and Target, they will be the only stores people will be shopping at this Xmas.
U.S. Mint Makes Drastic Cuts to Its Collector Gold and Platinum Coin Offerings
That's right. Kellogs, Skippy, and Dryers prices have risen 30-60% so they have reduced package/content size - while keeping prices the same so that you the consumer don't realize you are getting less.
Like it or not, that is hidden inflation....
What Does the Recent Saudi Gold Rush Mean?
Remember that you were warned long and often to buy gold and silver and to buy on dips...and if you haven't, you have only yourselves to blame.. When you only watch FOX news, or only follow CNN you will most suredly be taken to the cleaners. Start reading news from around the world, and pay attention to what is happening on the streets. If you have access to the internet, and you do, you have no excuses.
By the way, Google "tent cities" and check out the videos of cities nearby. It will shock you.
Gold Tests Its Reversal Level: Third Time's the Charm
The key, like bluesmoke says, is to hold a certain percentage of your portfolio in metals. Unfortunately, not everyone understands why they need to do this and that is why we keep repeating ourselves...
Is Hyperinflation on the Horizon?
I would say this is becoming one of those times across the globe. If there is no trust in the fiat currency and the government's effort to back it up then all bets are off...
Seems to me that this is where we are headed. You can hedge your bets to any degree you feel comfortable, but as many of us keep saying, you had better be hedged...
U.S. Mint Makes Drastic Cuts to Its Collector Gold and Platinum Coin Offerings
Good luck.
