American Express Is Now a Bank
I don't think Amex are in that much trouble, after all they just won a 4 billion dollar legal settleement from v and MA. Probably just a case of why look a gift horse in the mouth? if the fed wants to give me cheap cash am i really going to turn it down?

Also discover announced that it will use its deposits from Discover bank rather than commercial paper because its cheaper right now.

Testing New Lows on the S&P?
1929 - triple bottom then 47% rally, whats the chances this time around?

That would mean Dow at 12000 in April

Looking to 1987 for Guidance in 2008
Agree Greg, we are testing the low again now. The way things seem to work is that we will then get a pretty big rally because of low valuations.
That could take us the next 6 months, then the future direction will depend on if the real economy shows any life. If housing has bottomed by then we might be ok, like in 1988, but if not, we will fall all the way back down again in steps like in the great depresion.

Goldman Sachs Beaten, Buffett Down $2 Billion
Not the first time they've shorted the stuff they helped create. A Buffet investment is not a gaurantee of success, remember he offered to invest in Lehman Bros.....

Yeah buying tivo would make sense. What about RIM? the Apple Blackberry, sounds fruity!

When Will the Market Turn Around?
Great points of this article are that the market rallied something like 12 months before earnings bottomed out. Also the rally was 30-40% and happened very quickly, mostly in about a month. Market rallys after every big crash even after the 1929 crash, rallied in 1975, 1988,etc.
The question is after the 30-40% releif rally is over in 6-9months, what happens next?

Lessons From Past Bear Market Bottoms
Some comparisons in the media are just ridiluous. Most crashes occur when stocks are trading at crazy multiples like csco at 100xearnings in 2000.

      Chocolate Lover - Cramer's Mad Money (10/7/08)
What a load of cr*p. At the height of the tech boom CSCO was trading at a pe of 100, obviously unsustainable. Its fwd pe today is now under 10. I agree that Hershey will do well with lower commodity prices, but getting a $45 stock for $38 is hardly a bargain in this market.

Fear, Panic & Opportunity in the Markets
Good article, at the bare minimum we are definitely past half way and possibly very near the end. It can't get a lot worse (unless the US needs an IMF bailout!)
Unfortunately i'm 100% invested, so I don't have any choice but to go along for the ride!
I'm down 30% in US, 15% in pacific pesos (Aussie Dollars). The wife is not happy!

Time To Go Long, For A Short Time?
Now is the time to buy. All those people on the sidelines in cash will miss out and be shocked how fast the bounce back will be after the election.
Low interest rates, less competition, lower raw material costs = increased company profits = higher share price.

Be Like Buffett: Get Off the Roller Coaster
i've been tempted by GE, but I don't understand how a company thats made so much cash over the years is now short enough to have to give such good terms. Giving a discount and a 10% yeild is fire sale stuff, doesn't make sense to me. If I was a share holder, i'd be pissed

      Opportunities Buried Beneath the Headlines
Yeah, things aren't that bad, i've been 100% invested most of the year and i'm only down 5%. When the markets turn, people will be too slow to get back in fearing the worse. Stocks like BAC will rally 100% or more before the average mum and dad investor considers buying them.

AIG is so very different, plenty of good assets, surely they won't let this one fail becasue of mark-to-market accounting
